An entirely unique story and quite possibly a new big voice in the fantasy genre! Nazzara, heiress to the throne, is preparing for the King’s Duel Tournament where she can fight her way out of an arranged marriage. Dagen is the last King of Zarr and half ghost, with a chance to be free by capturing a pure soul; Nazzara’s soul. Only she has to give it to him freely or he forfeits his own soul. What we have is a pulse pounding epic journey! This was such an immersive read right from the very beginning! Cortney has written an intricately plotted epic high fantasy romance complete with excellent world building, a complex cast of well written characters, a unique magic system, and a slow burn romance that’s worth the 494 kindle pages! 🙌🏻 When I say this story was unique, I mean it. We get a lot of fantasy and so much of it is similar and a variation of the last but this story was amazing. We have two POVs between Nazzara and Dagen with fairly short chapters. I LOVED the snippets before some of the chapters from various pieces of other works, like The Zo Lexicon definitions and Diary entries, I thought it was a great way to deliver extra information. Nazzara is a kick* FMC! She’s fierce and loyal and I was rooting for her from the beginning. Dagen was definitely an intriguing character being half ghost and able to shift from his human to ghost form. The fact that Nazzara could sense spirits led for immediate intrigue. Their angsty tension, banter, and all around SLOW BURN relationship was perfection! I do hope we get more of Lo (Dagen’s sister) in the sequel because I really loved her attitude at the end.
