The Wild Card was such a great sports romance, I love love that it’s a baseball romance. I am a huge baseball fan and I LOVE that The Wild Card and the whole Dugout series is a baseball romance, it won my heart right away based on that and that was before I jumped in and started reading….and let me tell you I could not put the book down. From the first page to the very last page and to the bonus scene I was hooked and in love. With baseball season kicking off, The Wild Card was the perfect read while I had the game on in the background (I am a 100% Los Angeles Dodgers fan). This is book 2 and we are back with the Chicago Colts and this centers around Callie Carlisle - she is sarcastic, very witty, sassy as hell, cares deeply for her family and friends, independent, wears her heart on her sleeve but that heart does have a gate around it and Foster Davis - our brooding, bad boy closing pitcher, covered in tattoos, who always has a chip on his shoulder, tends to be a bit of a womanizer, cares a deeply for his friends who are like family to him who doesn’t really do love or relationships. Sprinkle in a one night stand with your best friend and teammates younger sister with a surprise pregnancy and you have one hell of a great sports romance book. The Wild Card is a little bit of slow burn as Callie and Foster navigate living together to try and become friends who can become great co-parents. Living together with the man you are having a baby with who you secretly are falling for and who is secretly falling for you, what could go wrong? Both Callie and Foster have pasts that have hardened them in different ways, both have walls up to protect their own hearts and the problem with falling in love with one another is scary for them both because you have to let your guard down and letting your guard down means possibly getting hurt. The journey both Callie and Foster begin that started out as a one night stand turns into a heartfelt story. You can see that they both want to jump in with both feet first but they get in their own heads and I found myself saying “Callie my girl talk to Foster, tell him what you are feeling” “Foster my guy, talk to Callie tell her you love her, she loves you too, just do it” To see this big brooding bad boy melt and become so overly protective of Callie and the baby was really sweet to read page after page. To watch Callie start to trust Foster each and every day melted my heart. Callie’s inner thoughts were great, they had me laughing so hard. The banter between Foster and his teammates was so great and one of my many favorite parts of this book. The Wild Card was a swoony, fun, emotional, heartfelt read that kept me fully invested from the very beginning. I cannot wait for the release of book 3!
