This whimsical, folkloric, and gothic-like tale had me captivated from the very first page! After spending her life forged as a weapon for battle by her father, Valeria runs away from her past, and sets out to start a new life, under a new name with a goal to keep her poisonous botanical magic and her true identity, hidden. While working at a special training center for dragons, Valeria, now known as Valenna, meets Evander, a dragon trainer, who has a secret past on his own. Evander wants to escape the haunting clutches of his mother, who seeks to kill him, after his father’s demise in battle. Evander meets Valenna, and falls in love. But mysteriously vanishes after one year. What he doesn’t want Valenna to know is that he is dying, and that he is the former prince of Askhendor, Valenna’s sworn enemy and the prince her father demanded that she kill. With time running out, and an invasion being planned by Valenna’s father, Evander and Valenna set out to find a cure for Evander, but have to face both their past sins and themselves along the way. The magic system, the plot, and the magical creatures in the entire story are absolutely magnificent and unique! I’ve never read a story that included botanical magic and so many fantastical (and somewhat eerie and terrifying) creatures. I absolutely loved Valenna and Evander both as a couple and as individual characters. Valenna’s love for whimsical dresses, dragons, and her zest for life was so refreshing to experience asa reader. Evander’s brilliance, care for Valenna, and responsibility for his trainees was so endearing to watch. I savored every second of this book! I cannot wait to dive into this world again for both book 2 and the standalone set in the world.
