A classic Gothic romance, this thrilling tale is everything you want in a darker romance. It's atmospheric, sensual, shrouded in shadows with shades of black and gray. The color coming from flashes of light reflected from the character's eyes, or the spilling of blood across an alabaster throat. The setting itself is as central to the story as the main characters. The story bleeds with suspense, intrigue, revenge, life, death and rebirth. Willow is a witch raised to be an instrument of revenge against the Coven that murdered her father's sister. Alaric Grayson Thorne is a Vessel, a vampire who is also the headmaster of Hollow's Grove University. The Coven sends him to collect Willow when her magic makes itself known. Thorne underestimates Willow, and Willow takes great delight putting the smug headmaster in his place. Twice. Their battle of wills is heart pounding, and sets the tempo for their entire relationship. The writing is phenomenal. There are multiple plots and subplots woven throughout the book. The magic of these witches is fascinating, as is their relationship to the Vessels. The world building using a Gothic setting is not only unique, but allows for the genre's darker elements to be used to great effect. I was completely captivated by this book. The sharp dialogue, the story premise, the setting, and the jaw dropping reveal leading to the cliffhanger had my pulse thundering with each turn of the page. Waiting for the next book is going to be hard, but believe me, The Coven is worth the book hangover.
