My favorite quote: “I am Elyria Lightbreaker. The Revenant. And I may have been left broken, but I am not so easily shattered.” “I know how impossible that seems, believe me. But trust is a blade sharpened on both sides. It can cut, yes. It also protects.” My thoughts: The definition of a true Romantasy! Gretchen wrote this book with every element that defines a true Romantasy. You have trials that have to be conquered by literal enemies, a slow burn/yearning tension, political unrest, hidden identities and a wait… what? ending. An ending that sent me straight into a Splintered Kingdom audiobook! When I only needed to read Smoke And Scar for Mojo Dojo Bookclub… I originally read Smoke And Scar to engage in Mojo Dojo Bookclub, but I couldn’t understand how this book was going to change that naive assumption. How could anyone read this book and NOT be immediately committed? I will be finishing this trilogy, or it will finish me. That has yet to be decided. Each character is so well-written and when they are altogether… chaos and LOL banter ensue! Gretchen gave us truly lovable or absolutely hate-able characters. Elyria is broken and just doesn’t care, Cedric is a warm cinnamon roll that constantly needs saving, Tenebris Nox is broody and mysterious with definite secrets, Thraigg will make you pee your pants with the things that come out of his mouth, Kit needs a break after what happened before and during the Arcane Crucible… lastly, Zephyr and Lord Church… just proceed with caution. Shhh. This group of characters is sheer perfection, along with this book. I love it ALL, Gretchen!
