Another favorite series comes to a close & Devney Perry finally gives us the story she's teased: Stevie & Maverick's rivalry is revealed. This childhood best friends to rivals to lovers story is one filled with hurt, stubborn resentment & how to show up for someone when faced with grief & loss. The emotional ties that Maverick & Stevie have are beautiful & there is a lot of humor laced with some of the heavy themes. When Maverick's mother becomes ill, both Stevie & Maverick's families come together to be by her side. Her last wish: for Stevie & Maverick to date. Stevie & Maverick have resented each other since childhood (the reasons are really so silly) but for Mav's mom, they relent. They carry on a charade of a relationship for her but as they spend more time together, they start to reveal their true feelings for one another.... This is an emotional, fake dating turned real situation that has so many great elements. There is the emotional pull that stems from Mav's mom dying - Stevie is his anchor in many ways as Mav goes through it. But Mav is there for Stevie too - Stevie overanalyzes everything. She's never really lived & Mav helps her to get out of her head & let go (and yes, this includes in the bedroom - the "teaching" moments are spicy & perfect). The banter between these two is top-tier. There is a level of pettiness that neither of them want to let go but as they both fall for one another, they start to realize the time wasted on something only their 12-year-old selves find to be significant. I laughed one moment and then cried the next. The rollercoaster of emotions is REAL! This story has a different feel - it's more raw & is filled with more angst. As a reader, I loved every moment & the satisfying epilogue completes this series perfectly. 🎧 Listening to this in dual narration by Megan Wicks & Robert Hachet brought these characters to life - chef's kiss performance!
