Wren Embervale is an alchemist-turned-assassin who has spent years in the shadows, fueled by a singular, burning need for vengeance. However, her reclusive life is shattered when a mysterious and lethal form of alchemy threatens the midrealms. To uncover a cure, she must secure a spot at the prestigious Drevenor academy by surviving the Gauntlet—a series of deadly, sanity-testing trials. As she navigates a treacherous web of political deception and targeted magic, Wren finds herself forced into an uneasy alliance with her greatest adversary: Torj Elderbrock. A silver-haired war hero and the man tasked with her protection, Torj harbors a deep-seated hatred for Wren, stemming from her past role in the assassination of his former charge. Featuring a high-stakes enemies-to-lovers romance, the story crackles with sharp banter, simmering tension, and the constant threat of betrayal. As Wren and Torj are thrust together, they must decide if their undeniable chemistry is a path to salvation or a lethal poison that could destroy them both. Perfect for fans of epic fantasy and slow-burn yearning, this gripping series opener delivers pulse-pounding action and emotional turmoil in equal measure.

This book had me up way past my bedtime.

Image 101: A 1x1 image, likely be a tacker probe Amazon Customer](javascript:void(0)) 5 out of 5 stars This book had me up way past my bedtime. Seriously, I couldn’t put it down, and as a Mom of a toddler this says a lot. For those already familiar with The Legends of Thezmarr, this isn’t just a walk down memory lane, we are back baby. The kingdom’s still running but things to some extent are a bit darker, as we explore the world through Wren’s calculating lense. Iron of Embers picks up in the aftermath of the The Legends of Thezmarr series, and while you technically can read this without reading Legends of Thezmarr first, I really, highly, recommend starting there. It adds so much more emotional weight to everything Wren’s going through here. (You’re robbing yourself if you don’t read it, but hey you do you boo-boo). Helen does a great job grounding readers in where we are now, showing us that things have seriously changed since Legends of Thezmarr. She builds out the world in a way that’s rich and layered, without overwhelming you with exposition. We meet some new characters (one of whom really stood out for me), but also get to enjoy some returning favorites, by which I mean Son of the Fox and Cal, obviously. The Son of the Fox continues to be one of my absolute favorite characters ever written, sorry not sorry. Wren and Torj’s dynamic is... intense. It’s a second-chance, slow-burn kind of situation with so much tension you could bottle it. At times it’s frustrating because there’s so much pain, love, and history tangled up between them but there are also very sweet and very hot moments between the two. Let’s just say the magnetism that you catch in Legends of Thezmarr returns and honestly with a little bit of a vengeance in some places. If you're into protective MMCs, bodyguard vibes, and emotionally complex relationships, this one’s for you. The alchemy school setting is interesting and full of fresh lore, though I’ll be honest, some of those sections slowed the pacing a bit. But thankfully, the banter between characters is sharp, and the comedy woven in to lighten heavier moments absolutely works. Even when the plot slows, the character dynamics keep you hooked and thankfully we’re also blessed to be in the lands of Thezmarr where something is always out to kill you and the world has its own agenda keeping everyone moving in the forward direction. Spice-wise? I’d give it a 3 to 3.5 out of 5. It’s a slow burn, but the eventual scenes are emotional, and intimate with some of the build up being very, very, fun. Their connection brings its own unique set of challenges and rewards. By the end of the book I was in literal tears. There are a lot of questions left open, and some really interesting directions this series could take. Wren and Torj both show very different, darker sides than we’ve seen before, and watching them try to piece themselves, and each other, back together was beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. Both characters deal with serious trauma they carry and a lot of trust issues. If you're into dual POVs, emotionally loaded romance, protective MMCs, sharp FMCs, and fantasy worlds with high stakes and high tension, you’re going to love this. Just a heads-up: if you only like stand alone novels, maybe hold off because I’m already counting down the days until the release of book two. As for proof that I stayed up past my bedtime: For reference I began the book Jan 30, 2025 and finished it Feb 3,2025. See all formats and editions “I’ve made no secret of what I want… You. It’s always been you.” Wren Embervale, alchemist-turned-assassin, finds solace in only one thing: seeking vengeance for the death of her friends. The wars of the past may be over, but her thirst for revenge is far from quenched. For years, she has been content with her poisons and potions for company, but when an unknown form of alchemy is used to attack a king of the midrealms, Wren’s time in the shadows comes to an end. She’s offered a place at the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor to find a cure to the dark magic threatening the kingdoms. To win her spot, she must conquer the Gauntlet, a grueling series of deadly trials that could cost her sanity, or her life. More is at play than sabotage from fellow competitors. Magic wielders are being targeted and Wren becomes tangled in a dangerous web of deception and bloodshed that puts the entire realm at risk. But the biggest threat of all might come from the man assigned to protect her—Torj Elderbrock, the silver-haired war hero who has hated her since she assassinated his last charge. Their shared history ignites a simmering tension that threatens to consume them both. Peace is fragile, trust is scarce and enemies lurk around every corner… Will love heal all wounds—or will it be the most lethal poison of all? Iron & Embers is the breathtaking first installment in the epic fantasy romance series, The Ashes of Thezmarr.
