It's 1000% cringy at times, but it's done in an unputdownable addictive way. I read this book in less than a day. I, seriously, couldn't put it down. When I did, I'd hurriedly do whatever I needed to get done so that I could get right back to this story and these characters. It's a guilty pleasure of a good time! I don't know what is in this book that had me hungrily turning page after page at a rapid pace, but it was something. It's nothing life-changing, epic, or sensational. It's just a fun read. You'll have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy this, though. The writing is questionable in the sense that sometimes what's going on doesn't make sense. I had to occasionally pause to try and catch up to where the author is taking us in the story. She jumps from one thing to the next. Typically, writing shenanigans like that really tick me off. Somehow, that's not the case here. I think it's because the author is a good enough story teller that even though she has a problem with filling in the blanks (so to speak) from one scene transition to the next, she's able to tug on a reader's curiosity enough to make them want to power through, trying to fill in the blanks for themselves. Since the plot is nothing mindbendingly masterful, the little smidge of extra thought needed to figure out what is going on isn't too much of a chore. I'd rather not have to put in the effort, but it is what it is, and I think it's worth it. It took a minute for any of these characters to grow on me. However, It didn't take too long. There isn't a prominent character within this book that I didn't end up caring for. There is something endearing and relatable hidden beneath the surface of each one. I want to know the long game for each of the boys... how things are going to work out for them in the end. For the moment, I'll be committing to reading the entire series. I hope the following books keep me interested as this one has me thinking I'm hooked in for the long haul. I've been aware of this series for almost a year. I avoided it due to some pretty compelling bad reviews. They were critical of the writing style, and I completely understand why. Heck, I'm still trying to figure out if I really like this author or if I'm just tolerating her because I have an interest in reading the kind of romances she writes. The jury is still out on that. Other reviews were critical of the plot and the characters. They found the plot lacking and the characters preposterous. I get that too, but it's still a darn good time, and I don't care, lol. I ate this up. I'm about to eat up the next one also! This is one of those times where I'm kicking myself for letting reviews discourage me from picking this up.
