Geissinger Rating: ★★★★¾ What did I just read?! This book absolutely demolished me in the best possible way, and I devoured every single page in 24 hours because I literally could not put it down. From the moment Maven Blackthorn stepped onto the page, I was completely captivated. She's the perfect blend of razor-sharp intellect and cutting sarcasm that had me highlighting her dialogue constantly. Maven isn't just a brilliant scientist with a PhD in Entomology, she's a fiercely protective single mother trying to shield her daughter Bea from the dark legacy of the Blackthorn family. And wow, the words that come out of her mouth are absolute perfection. Then there's Ronan Croft, and the chemistry between these two is absolutely combustible. They are hands down the hottest book couple of 2025! Their backstory is rich and complex, built on a foundation of family feuds and past betrayals that creates this incredible tension. The will-they-won't-they dynamic had me on the edge of my seat because Maven is so beautifully torn about him. You can feel every one of her insecurities and her indecisiveness bleeding through the pages. "Looking back only one to burn the memory of him sleeping in my mind's eye before I silently walk out the door." The vulnerability in that line absolutely wrecked me. The side characters add such incredible depth to this story. Bea, Maven's daughter, is freaking adorable with her dark nature and dialogue that's far beyond her years. She's this perfect blend of innocence and inherited darkness. Maven's aunts, Esme and Davina, are enigmatically terrifying in the best gothic way possible. But can we talk about that ending? I'm still reeling! The pacing was masterful, normal chapter after normal chapter, and then BAM, mind-blowing revelation after revelation that I absolutely did not see coming. The way Geissinger compressed those final revelations created this beautiful disorientation that left me questioning everything I thought I knew about the story. This book reads like binging the most addictive Netflix series, complete with sharp, witty banter and gothic atmosphere that seeps into your bones.
